In spite of all the reasons I give why CrossFit is the Greatest Fitness program I have ever found. There is one reason that stands above the rest. Community. No other program has created a community on the scale that CrossFit has. Sure there are communities around the world. You can walk into a power lifting gym and feel at home as a power lifter or any other example of the sort. I do not of a program however that when you are traveling for work you can go to a gym work out and after doing your business for the day return to your hotel room to find a gift basket including a bottle of wine and gift cards to a local restaurant from some one in the gym. ( this actually happened to a friend of mine). While this is likely the case in many gyms and studios it is not as far as I can tell a theme of any fitness program/ gym out there. Not Gold's Gym 24 hour, LA Fitness none. Why is the greatest reason to do CrossFit? Because the greatest enemy to achieving and maintaining fitness is having to stick with it and all the excuses you can come up with to not go. Adherence rates among CrossFit Gyms are among the best I have ever heard of. I personally have not had one Client leave yet and while my gym is fairly new I do not see any of them leaving... ever. How can I assume that my clients will never leave me barring death, are change of location. As much as I would like to say it is because of the results I give them ( and in part it is) I think the most important thing is that they are all my friends. I am involved in their lives and they are involved in mine. And this is true for the majority of CrossFit Gyms out there. CrossFit as a whole has found a way to get people to work hard... many times at things they suck at... in ways that are often uncomfortable during and immediately after wards and then keep them coming back. We are not a bunch of sadists who like pain, but we as a group have realized what it takes to be fit and we share in a common experience whenever we go to the gym and come to enjoy each others company. Why is this on my mind you might be wondering right now. And what does it have to do with Oly Lifting, or surprise parties for that matter. Well just this. This weekend I traveled down to Malibu on Saturday for a work out at CFM and was then heading on Sunday to Sean Waxmans Gym for an Oly lifting seminar. On Saturday after helping coach the WOD ( I was not quite up to it that morning) I was giving two pieces of information 1st there was a suprise party happening that night for one of the members of CFM and I was invited, two Waxman's Seminar was not happening( great Job on my part in confirming that it was happening ). We managed to surprise for the first time someone who prided himself on never being surprised, and more than half the gym showed up, and then even though I messed up with the date of the seminar the coaches of CFM offered to meet with me on Sunday to allow me to do an Oly session so I would not have wasted the drive down there. While i know that I did not do it justice this weekend reminded why I love CrossFit and couldn't imagine doing any thing else.
